Language as a tool for conflict resolution: role plays and scenarios using “Cards for Democracy”Â
1. introductionÂ
In class: students explore a selection of “Cards for Democracy” and play ->
Speed Dating for Democracy
- A Card for Democracy is projected (from the new school site → eTwinning → Cards for Democracy). Each pair discusses the card for 1 minute (an online gong can be used to signal the time).
- Participants take turns speaking, so that each round lasts about 2 minutes. They discuss with their partner how they already practise this behaviour in their daily life. For example:
How do I encourage the inclusion of vulnerable people or groups? When was the last time I did it? How did I feel? When did I fail to do it? What makes it easy or difficult? - At the sound of the bell, one row moves one seat forward.
- A second Card for Democracy is then projected and each new pair discusses it for 2 minutes, and the activity continues in the same way until time is over.
- Debriefing questions:
- How did you feel during the activity?
- Did you learn something new? What was it?
- Did anything surprise you?
Do you have any ideas about what you would like to develop in the near future regarding your inner disposition for democracy?
