Creativity meets sustainability: upcycling workshop by first-year language students

On May 28, 2025, two  students from  Year 9 (1H, a first-year language class),  presented the outcomes of their “Beyond tomorrow”  upcycling project to their classmates, to a second-year language class and to several teachers. The activity, carried out in English, combined creativity, sustainability, and teamwork.

The initiative was also developed as part of the Litter Less Campaign – Young Reporters for the Environment, a UNESCO-supported programme that encourages students to take action on environmental issues through hands-on learning and communication.

Focusing on the theme of creative reuse, the students worked in small groups to give new life to second-hand objects. Tote bags were transformed into stylish clutches, while old or broken necklaces and earrings became decorative elements that added flair to the bags. Even discarded prose books found a new voice: students selected pages and turned them into  “blackout poems,” revealing hidden messages by isolating select words and phrases with dark ink, turning literature into visual art.

The two presenters guided the audience through their group’s work explaining the process and reflecting on the environmental and creative value of upcycling. Their presentation inspired their peers to consider how everyday objects can be repurposed with imagination and care.
