At Liceo Niccolò Machiavelli two students from the Gymnasium Casimirianum, Coburg, Germany participating in the Erasmus+ long-term mobility (LTM) program gave an engaging presentation in English on their school and country, focusing on the following elements about Europe:
- Different school systems
- Different approaches to teaching
- English as language for intercultural connection
- Similar values
They reported about Inclusion and Diversity in their school and described how senior students help new children to include them in the school community, how weaker students get help from other students and teachers. Their school also supports students from other countries with special teaching and tutoring activities. There is a school psychologist that supports students with special needs. Besides, the school organizes various school trips to promote connections with each other.
The two German students focused on the importance their school gives to Digital Education with special attention to data protection.
They also described their participation in Democratic Life, which is one of the fundamental values of Europe. Here how the electoral system at their school works:
- Junior elections to prepare for real elections
- Election of three representatives of all students (“Schülersprecher”)
- Two representatives for each class
- Political topics and discussions in Politics and History classes
Finally they talked about their experience in Rome, at Liceo Machiavelli and in their host families and said they felt really welcomed and treated respectfully. They hope the Italian and German shools continue and protect this interaction with each other. They think that the class community of each country should be taken as an example once Erasmus+ travelling students go back to their own school and country. They depicted Rome as a city open to all ethnic groups, where everyone is able to practice their religion in freedom. They also believe the city and its citizens do a lot of work against violence and discrimination.
These students’ presentation highlighted Germany’s alignment with European values and goals, showing how their school is preparing students to use digital tools skillfully and responsibly, to be both socially and politically conscious European citizens and to be open to new, different cultures and educational systems.
